ASF Afghan Cup 2014 Press Release

A pre-tournament dinner event for team representatives, media representatives, community leaders, friends of Afghanistan from various public and private organizations, and ASF administrators and volunteers was held at Dunya Banquet Hall, courtesy of Hashem Abbasi. The event was organized by ASF’s Events Coordinator, Hassina G. Ansary, on July 30th, the evening before the start of the games. 

Thousands of Afghans from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Afghanistan participated in the 4-day festival that featured sporting events, as well as cultural activities. Sports included men’s soccer, youth soccer, men’s basketball, youth basketball, and men’s over-30 soccer in the featured sports at Afghan Cup 2014.

ASF's "Afghan Cup" has become the largest Afghan sporting and cultural event outside of Afghanistan and has attracted major Afghan athletes from all over the world to showcase their talents in a series of competitive games. From these annual Afghan Cup events held by ASF, both soccer players and basketball players have been selected to represent the Afghanistan National Squads, which has contributed to the rise in Afghanistan’s world ranking for these sporting disciplines.

Eight selected soccer teams with Afghan players from around the world in the men’s division competed for 4 days. Brishna of New York beat ASF select of Virginia by a score of 4-1 to claim the soccer championship title. Fazal Nabi, of Brishna FC was named the men’s soccer MVP. ASF's Soccer Commissioner Jamil Faryadi and coleagues, Azi Wasi, Zia panjshiri, Esmat Abbassi and Faiz Behgoman administered the soccer tournament.

Nine basketball teams from around the country were featured in this year’s basketball tournament. New York BC won the ASF Afghan Cup 2014 basketball championship. ASF Basketball Commissioner Esmael Husseini and Assistant Basketball Commissioner Shakil Rahman supervised the 3-day basketball tournament.

In the Mens over 30 competions Noor FC of California beat Afghan 11 of VA for the Championship trophy on Sunday before the men's open Championship. 

immediately after the soccer championship game ended, the trophy presentation ceremony was conducted by ASF acting President Atiq Panjshiri, which included sports personalities and community leaders who handed out much-deserved prizes to all the Champions. 

During the 4-day event, all schedules, scores, locations and other relevant information for fans and athletes were managed and updated on the Afghan Sports Federation website managed by ASF Creative Director, Faiz Behgoman and Facebook page managed by ASF Social Media Coordinator, Aimal Ahmadzai.

Atiq Panjshiri attributed the success of yet another year of great cultural and sporting activities to the hard work and dedication of ASF administrators and a large number of volunteers. He also thanked all the athletes and team managers for their effort and participation and the fans for their continued support over the past 17 years.
